How Diamonds Are Graded

If you are purchasing a diamond you will need to know how diamonds are graded. These tips will help you get the most value for your money.

Diamonds are graded on 4 factors which are Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat.

Cut refers to two aspects of the diamond which is the shape of the diamond and how well it has been cut. The way a diamond is cut will reflect on how much it shines and sparkles. A diamond must be cut in a geometrically precise manner to obtain the most brilliance.

Color refers to the color of the diamond. The most valuable diamonds are absolutely colorless. The color of a diamond is graded on an alphabetical scale from D-Z with D being colorless and Z being light yellow.

Clarity refers to imperfections in the diamonds that can or cannot be seen by the naked eye. Most imperfections can only be seen by a jeweler that uses a magnifying loupe. Diamonds are graded on a clarity scale as well. FL (Flawless), IF (Internally Flawless), VVS1-VVS2 (Very, Very Slightly Included), VS1-VS2 (Very Slightly Included), SI1-SI3 (Slightly Included), I1-I3 (Included).

Carat refers to how much the diamond weighs and not necessarily the size of the diamond. One carat is equal to 200 milligrams. One carat can be divided into 100 points so a .50 carat diamond is the same as 50 points or a half a carat diamond. Large diamonds are harder to come by than smaller diamonds so larger diamonds will be more expensive.
